We can help you 🥳🥳🥳
Between 6-7 months of age, your baby will have the dexterity and physical capability to independently find and replace their own dummy 🎉 . This is attributed to the development of the pincer grasp, enabling them to pick up objects using their thumb and index finger 👌🏻. With a little guidance on how to do so, our goal is to reduce fragmented sleep and the need for your help to replace it 🤞🏻
For the first few days, place their dummy in their hand ✋🏻 and assist in guiding it to their mouth 👄. Afterward, solely place it in their hand, encouraging them to guide it to their mouth independently 👶🏻
During the second week, encourage them to retrieve their dummy on their own while dedicating time during the day to practice this skill. This can be done by placing your baby on the floor and positioning the dummy next to them, gradually increasing the distance over time 👣
Thankfully, as per Red Nose Australia’s safe sleep guidelines, babies from 7 months of age can safely sleep with a comforter 🧸. Therefore, to reduce the risk of their dummy falling through the cot bars or having multiple dummies, we recommend having at least* 2 comforters, each with a dummy attached 🥰.
This not only makes it easier for your baby to find and replace their own dummy, but also provides them with a comforter, offering reassurance before the onset of separation anxiety (typically arising around 8 months 😖).
