Factors that exacerbate reflux - Part III

Part 3️⃣

While we discussed the symptoms of reflux in Part ☝️ and ways to ease reflux in Part ✌️ - It is important to consider other factors that may inadvertently increase your baby’s susceptibility to or exacerbation of reflux 😩

👶🏻 Dummies
Babies with reflux often find comfort in sucking, as it increases saliva production and neutralizes their stomach acid. While constant feeding isn’t practical and comes with its own repercussions, offering a dummy may help.
However, babies with reflux may suck vigorously and swallow more air, which can exacerbate their reflux.

🥛 Consider hypoallergenic formula
If you aren’t breastfeeding, hypoallergenic formulas that have been predigested move through your baby’s stomach faster than standard formulas, reducing the likelihood of it flowing back into their esophagus.
Please consult with your healthcare professional to see if hypoallergenic formulas are appropriate for your baby.

🚬 Smoking
Nicotine increases stomach acid and relaxes the esophageal sphincter, exacerbating reflux. It is recommended not to smoke around your baby or while breastfeeding, as nicotine can also pass through your breast milk.
Even if you don’t smoke, be mindful of visitors who do, and ask them to wear fresh clothing if they want to cuddle your baby.

If you feel your baby may have reflux, please consult your healthcare professional for an assessment - you are not alone in this process 🩷💫
