This often comes down to personal preference. Generally, newborn babies are swaddled with their arms tucked down in a muslin wrap. However, if their swaddle isn’t done properly, they can wriggle out of it and become distressed, leading us to think that they hate being swaddled 😩
We personally prefer an arms up swaddle as they allow your baby to access their hands as they did in the womb, unlike an arms down swaddle. Having an arms up swaddle also allows your baby to suck their hands through the swaddle for self-soothing. However, every baby has a unique temperament, and you may find one style more suitable for them than another.
The best way to know? Trial and error.. Just like our journey through motherhood 🩷💫
Swaddling also:
👶🏻 Helps soothe your baby to promote better sleep by mimicking the feeling of being in the womb
👶🏻 Prevents their Moro startle reflex, which can wake them from sleep
👶🏻 There are no need for blankets when using a TOG-rated swaddle, making them a safe alternative to traditional wraps and blankets
