Although not all toddlers attempt to climb out of their cot, some may begin doing so around 2 years of age, while others might start as early as 18 months.
We recommend keeping your toddler in their cot until they reach the age of 3. By this time, they have the verbal capability to comprehend rules and begin developing some level of impulse control.
5 strategies to keep your toddler in their cot?
1️⃣ Keep them secure in a sleeping bag. This will make it more difficult for them to get their leg up and over the top or side of their cot, decreasing the risk of them falling out.
2️⃣ If they can unzip their sleeping bag, consider putting it on backwards or inside out to hinder their ability to escape during the night.
3️⃣ Consider removing the mattress slats from the cot and placing the mattress directly on the floor within the cot itself.
4️⃣ Surround their cot with pillows and remove any nearby furniture or toys that may assist in climbing out of the cot or pose a risk of injury.
5️⃣ Refrain from making it rewarding for them, such as co-sleeping with them once they get out of bed. Doing so can reinforce their behaviour, encouraging them to continue doing it ♡
