⚠️ Cot mobiles
Cot mobiles can be both impractical and dangerous for a few reasons. Firstly, they hang directly above your baby while they sleep, which may be overstimulating and hinder their ability to wind-down and fall asleep 😫. Additionally, cot mobiles pose a choking and strangulation hazard, particularly if your baby manages to reach them at some point, if parts become loose or detached, or if they aren’t securely mounted 🚫
⚠️ Cot bumpers
While cot bumpers are universally sold and available online, Red Nose Australia’s safe sleep guidelines and the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP) does not recommend them 🙅🏻♀️. This is because your baby could roll over and become trapped between the cot bars and the cot bumper, potentially leading to suffocation❗️. If you are worried about your baby getting their arm caught between the cot bars, ensure you always place them in the centre of their cot. They may experience getting stuck once or twice, but they will quickly become familiar with their surroundings and sleeping environment 🩷
⚠️ Hanging cords from monitors, curtains or blinds
Hanging cords from curtains or blinds might be out of reach for your baby now, but it won’t be long before they start pulling themselves up and walking along furniture 🥹. To prevent these cords from becoming a strangulation hazard, please baby proof your house as soon as possible if you haven’t already 🔐. Also consider installing high-mounted power points to eliminate dangling cords from electrical devices, like baby monitors or lamps, which also pose a strangulation risk. Alternatively, you can purchase cable covers which are available at Bunnings, which attach to the wall with double-sided tape and can be easily removed in the future 👏🏻
